In 2000 Photiou Architects took part in a competition to design a new Olympic Sports Centre for high altitude training. We developed an elegant and cost effective building by designing a simple light shell structure using minimal materials and surfaces.
The building consist of on upper level and 3 main halls, all covered by graceful curving roof.
The load bearing roof is constructed of timber, steel trusses and copper sheeting. Each hall is made accessible via a common foyer.
Situated in a clearing and practically enclosed by trees, the building is surrounded by mounded earth formed from the excavation of the property to create facades and sits within view of the mountain valley.
Sustainability was central to the design and included maximum use of natural ventilation, an efficient organisation of the floor plan reducing the outside surface of the building and heating and cooling loads reduced though the use of the lowered basement.
